Advisor Voices in Washington: A Conversation with Larry Leitch
Larry Leitch, a founding partner at SFG Wealth Management, has been involved in LPL advocacy efforts from the very beginning. He has traveled to Washington multiple times to engage directly with policymakers on issues that matter to independent advisors and their clients. In this Q&A, Larry shares what motivated him to get involved, what he has learned from those experiences, and why advisor voices continue to matter in Washington.
Q: You have invested real time traveling to Washington for fly‑ins, including on complex issues like TCJA. When did advocacy go from being “interesting” to feeling personally important to you?
Larry: Honestly, it has always felt important to me. What changed was having a meaningful way to engage. When the PAC was created, it gave me a constructive outlet to contribute beyond conversations with peers. Being able to participate directly and support thoughtful advocacy has been both motivating and rewarding.
Q: Many advisors care deeply about policy outcomes but hesitate to engage. What surprised you most the first time you walked into a policymaker’s office as an advisor?
Larry: I was pleasantly surprised by how practical and solution oriented many of the conversations were. Washington is far more centered than it is often portrayed. I was also struck by how open policymakers and staff were to hearing from advisors with firsthand experience.
Q: How does an advisor’s voice differ from that of a firm, trade association, or lobbyist?
Larry: Advisors bring a unique credibility. We are constituents, business owners, and investors ourselves, so our perspective feels real and relevant. That helps put policy discussions into real world context.
Q: What keeps you coming back over time?
Larry: Advocacy is a marathon effort, very similar to advising clients. Staying engaged consistently builds trust and influence, and it is rewarding to see that progress develop over time.
Q: How do you view the PAC within LPL’s broader advocacy efforts?
Larry: The PAC has been essential to building consistency and credibility. Early on, a lot of time was spent explaining who LPL and independent advisors were. Today, LPL is a well-known and respected name on Capitol Hill, which allows conversations to focus on substance. That evolution reflects years of steady engagement and makes our collective voice far more effective.
